What we do

Clinical Research

We are a locally and internationally renowned research center. We design our own scientific studies as well as perform research in collaboration with other institutions and the pharmaceutical industry. We conduct continuing medical and paramedical training and organize other professional education.

In 2009, more than 320 patients took part in clinical trials through 21 active protocols. All our clinical research is approved by an Independent Bioethics Committee (IRB).

Epidemiology and Prevention

Our integrated model of Sexual and Reproductive Health, HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections focuses on vulnerable populations.  Working closely with local government and civil society networks, we generate extensive health promotion activities. Our goal is to simplify access to information, prevention and care of HIV/AIDS. We offer training, technical assistance, and work actively to influence public policy.

In 2009, more than 8000 youth, 100 policy makers, 40 social organizations and 150 health care professionals participated in prevention, training and information dissemination activities. More than 10,000 people were tested in 16 community counseling centers and 9 public health centers. We distributed 125,000 condoms and 20,000 leaflets, comic books, DVDs and other prevention materials. Social research, including indigenous populations and youth living with HIV, were performed in the northwestern provinces of Argentina.

Community Services

We promote healthy quality of life and positive environments for people living with HIV/AIDS, understanding that health is not only physical, but also psychological and social well-being. We offer direct services, develop research and training and carry out outreach programs on issues related to human rights and mental health.

In 2009, over 80 volunteers supported prevention activities and services for people affected by the epidemic. We conducted over 400 initial physiological consultations and more than 100 people enrolled in support groups for people living with HIV/AIDS. 500 people sought assistance from our legal and human rights services. With the network of PLWHA of Mar del Plata we are responsible to determine the Index of Stigma and Discrimination suffered by PLWHA in Argentina.

Communications and Resource Development

We provide access to information about HIV/AIDS in a clear, simple and effective manner in our prevention campaigns. Our aim is to make HIV/AIDS a perennial topic in various forms of media and to ensure that information is communicated ethically and responsibly. Our public awareness activities reach audiences in a personal manner.

In 2009, 1.5 million people saw our television special “Revelations” on Argentina’s open air Channel 13. Each month, more than 10,000 people read “Espacio Positivo”, Fundacion Huesped´s blog on the Clarin website, Argentina’s leading newspaper. Fundacion Huesped is the Regional Secretariat of the Latin America Media AIDS Initiative (IMLAS in Spanish) which includes 22 broadcasters in 12 countries as members.

Youth Area

We promote the health and sexual and reproductive rights of young people, providing them with access to information and creating effective messages, strengthening their communication and leadership skills.

We are the Regional Secretariat of the Latin American Youth Network responding to HIV/AIDS (JLU in Spanish ) and execute collaborative projects with the Youth for Health Network (RJS in Spanish), promoting the use of ICT as a tool for health promotion and participation of teens and other youth. We coordinate an international initiative in Argentina called dance4life, which engages youth in schools, training them in HIV/AIDS prevention, sexual and reproductive health and rights promotion.
